In an given industry, there inevitably ends up being a veritable sea of clones. 1000’s of people, all doing the same boring things. 

 

Same color palette, same logo, same boring stock photos, same packaging, same website language, same pricing tiers. 

 

Same, same, same. 

 

For Doulas, it's... The same pregnancy silhouette logo. Same pastel color palette. EXACT same definition of what a doula is and does. Same package, same features, same price, same messaging, same positioning, same overused birth quotes on Instagram. 

 

See, here’s how it happens: The newer doulas don’t know what they’re doing (yet!) so they end up becoming carbon copies of everyone that came before them, who copied everyone who came before them. 

 

Except for the people up top, the one-percenters, who are CRUSHING it! 

 

And let me tell you what they all have in common.

Honestly, different is kind of the BEST thing you can be, marketing/branding-wise. And no, this isn’t my personal opinion, but an industry fact per Seth Godin (author, “Purple Cow”) and Sally Hogshead (author of “Fascinate” and “How the World Sees You”). Go get these from your local library ASAP! 

 

Anyway, back to my point: One of the reasons you’re not getting clients is maybe because you look and sound exactly like everyone else out there. 

 

Clients are thinking: Why should I pick you, when there are hundreds of other doulas out there that do EXACTLY what you do... and maybe even for a lower price? 

 

And here's what rad; you don't have to "try" to be different... you already are different. THERE IS NO ONE LIKE YOU ON THIS GREEN EARTH! 

 

But... you keep covering up your uniqueness! 

 

The world needs the REAL you, warts and all. Just be real.

  2. Am I covering that up or showcasing it?
  3. What special skills, talents and abilities do I have that most other people don’t? Does my audience know that?!
  4. What makes me unique?
  5. How am I different from my colleagues?
  6. What’s my particular zone(s) of genius?
  7. What makes me weird, funky, magical and different?
  8. Am I being 100% authentic or do I censor myself/water myself down to please the masses?

  

If you want a sustainable, profitable, legitimate business (and I know you do!) - you have to know your USP (Unique Selling Proposition).  

 

Your USP = what makes you DIFFERENT.
